Registered Nurse Patient Safety Specialist

The Patient Safety Specialist will function independently, but under the guidance of the Patient Safety Manager, frequently interacting with members of the Medical Center Leadership including service chiefs, supervisors, managers and employees in staff positions. The incumbent will promote a climate of collaboration, cooperation, and understanding and serves as an advisor/consultant to all services on policy and issues related to patient safety throughout the Medical Center. He/she actively is involved in the adverse reporting system (JPSR) with investigation and analysis and corrective action. He/she also interacts with employees of the National Center for Patient Safety, outside accrediting agencies and VHA employees from the Network and other agencies. Along with the Patient Safety Manager and established priorities, the incumbent helps build and implement safety systems and promote the culture of safety as a high reliability organization within VA facilities and for VA patients in all health care settings. Additionally, the incumbent executes position responsibilities that contribute to the improvement of safe patient care, productivity, effectiveness and efficiency of Medical Center operations. Some travel to the other Outpatient Clinics will be required. The incumbent reports to the Chief, Quality Management. Current hospital based experience required. Work Schedule:

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant:
The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing; The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Experience:
Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing required with a Master's Degree in Nursing or a related field strongly preferred; Aminimum offive (5) years of successful full-time nursing clinical practice is preferred; Advanced knowledge of patient safe analysis methods, root cause analyses, cause and effect and failure mode and effects analysis, leadership and program management; Advanced knowledge and understanding of The Joint Commission's national patient safety goals and the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) National Center for Patient Safety goals and objectives; Knowledge and skills in conducting safety inspections/evaluation for patient safety; Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team member and leader, with excellent interpersonal skills, strong organizational skills, and excellent oral communication and writing skills, as demonstrated in previous assignments. Grade Determinations:
The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree. Reference:

The incumbent of the position performs direct patient care and must meet the below physical requirements to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
