The Clinical Dietitian will be involved in the professional practice of dietetics in accordance with the guidance set forth in Nutrition and Food Service policies and procedures and VA regulations governing the practice of dietetics. Incumbent will serve as medical nutrition experts responsible for independently planning, developing and directing all nutritional care activities for assigned clients, including those with complex medical and nutritional needs. Incumbent will support the facility's mission and coordinates nutritional care with other health care providers, the client, the client's family and the community. cumbent will be responsible for teaching inpatient nutritional classes regarding exercise, healthy living, meal planning etc. In addition, they will be responsible for conducting nutritional assessments on the mental health and inpatient units as assigned. In addition, this position will provide staff relief coverage to the Lake Nona Domiciliary/ Community Living Center unit dietitians as needed. Patient population includes older adults/geriatric population with a variety of clinical conditions to include requirements for parenteral, enteral nutrition, specialized diets and oral nutrition supplements. Daily workload can vary but usually requires 8-10 assessments per day. Dietitian works closely with inpatient dietitians who cover during the week to coordinate workload needs and also work with foodservice staff. Daily schedule ranges from patient assessments, assessments, meal rounds, nursing training and professional development. Performance plan is set on objective measures for clinical care accuracy, ability to conduct self in professional manner, ability to manage multiple task/priorities, submit requested reports within designated timeframes, maintain patient spreadsheets and participate in professional development/growth based upon agreement in place with supervisor. Position requires expertise in a wide range of disease entities, treatment modalities and drug/nutrient interactions. The Clinical Dietitian may be scheduled and assigned to any nutrition practice area, and must possess the required knowledge and skills in order to perform the following functions:
Serves as the nutrition expert on the interdisciplinary treatment team which includes physicians, nurses, and other allied health professionals. Develops and implements an individualized plan for medical nutrition therapy in accordance with the patient's medical program goals and objectives. Accurately obtains and interprets medical information pertinent to the patient's nutritional care to determine risk, assess nutritional status and develop individual specialized care plans to simultaneously address several disease processes. Calculates nutritional requirements (calories, protein, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins, electrolytes, fluid) and necessary diet restrictions or food/drug interactions. Diet prescribed is tailored to each individual client's according to physical and metabolic needs and designs the nutritional treatment plan with consideration for psychosocial, behavioral, ethnic and cultural factors to obtain desirable outcomes and promote long-term adherence to a medical nutritional care plan. May require a therapeutic plan for specialized nutrition support, including enteral and parenteral nutrition for patients with complex medical and nutritional needs. Identifies patients in need of nutrition support and recommends the appropriate mode of nutrition support, including suitable route, formula, and rate of administration. Provides initial and on-going nutritional assessments of patients receiving enteral and/or parenteral nutrition. Orders labs, diets and consults per Scope of Practice/Clinical privileges. Evaluates and monitors the effectiveness and outcome of medical nutrition therapy interventions. Evaluates the patient's response to care based on identified, measurable outcomes and reviews the plan as appropriate. Documents nutrition care plan in the patient's medical record, including nutrition assessment data, medical nutrition therapy initiated and recommendations, results of nutrition counseling and discharge planning. Documentation supports an interdisciplinary approach and continuity of care. Work Schedule:
Saturday and Sunday, 7:
30am - 4pm The selectee may be required to work or travel between any of the locations within Corporate Orlando. The selectee may also be required to work various shift on a permanent or temporary basis, based on patient care needs. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. 1. The individual must have earned a bachelor's degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college or university or foreign equivalent and fulfilled each of the following criteria:
(a) Completed a didactic program in dietetics accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), formerly known as the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetic Education (CADE). (b) Completed an ACEND accredited or approved supervised practice program. Supervised practice programs are post-baccalaureate degree programs that provide supervised practice experiences which meet the eligibility requirements and accreditation standards of ACEND, formally known as CADE. Completion of a coordinated program in dietetics fulfills the requirements of a supervised practice program. Time spent in a dietetic internship or supervised practice program does not qualify as creditable experience. 2. Individuals who have earned college and/or university degrees outside the United States and its territories also must have their transcripts evaluated by a foreign transcript evaluation service to determine if their degree is equivalent to a degree granted by a regionally accredited college or university in the United States. Validation of a foreign degree does not eliminate the need for verification of completion of didactic program, dietetic internship, or coordinated program requirements. The completion of ACEND didactic program requirements and at least a bachelor's degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college/university or foreign equivalent are necessary for eligibility to enter an ACEND-accredited supervised practice program. Registration/Certification:
All applicants must be registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) the credentialing branch of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics formerly known as the American Dietetic Association (ADA). Advanced Level Practice Dietitians must possess a minimum of one advanced practice credential relevant to the area of practice, (e.g. Certified Nutrition Support Clinician (CNSC), Board Certified Specialist in Renal Nutrition (CSR), Board Certified Specialist in Gerontological Nutrition (CSG), Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE), or Board Certified Specialist in Oncology Nutrition (CSO)). Grandfathering Provision:
All persons employed in VHA as a dietitian on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held, including positive education and registration requirements or board certification, if applicable. Dietitians must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d). Experience:
ICU and inpatient experience. Incumbent must be able to demonstrate knowledge, skills and abilities of a GS 11 dietitian as well as be able to correctly identify resources for nutrition evidence based practice within this population. Incumbent must be able to utilize technology daily, to include computer with dual monitors, laptop, cell phone, vocera and ability to troubleshoot IT issues given resource. Grade Determinations:
GS-11 Dietitian (Full Performance Level) (a) Experience or Education. At least 1 year of experience as a registered dietitian equivalent to the next lower grade level, or education equivalent to 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education, or a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral (c) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities a. Knowledge of best practices in the dietetics profession and in scientific literature, including knowledge of research methods, study design, data collection, interpretation of findings, and translation of results into nutrition practice. b. Ability to comply with various accrediting, regulatory, and agency authorities. c. Ability to develop and maintain a system of internal reviews and direct quality control and performance improvement studies. d.
