Sweeney Todd is a 1979 musical thriller with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and libretto by Hugh Wheeler.
The musical is based on the 1973 play Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street by Christopher Bond.
Set in 19th century England, the musical tells the story of Benjamin Barker, aka Sweeney Todd, who returns to London after 15 years' transportation on trumped-up charges.
When he finds out that his wife poisoned herself after being raped by the judge who transported him, he vows revenge on the judge and, later, the whole world.
He teams up with a pie maker, Mrs.
Lovett, and opens a barbershop in which he slits the throats of customers and has them baked into pies.

Nellie Lovett (Alto/Mezzo, Cockney Accent, moves well, 40s) Joanna Barker (Soprano, 18-early 20's) Benjamin Barker's daughter, a ward of Judge Turpin.
Beautiful and pure-hearted.
Anthony Hope (Tenor, 20s) A good natured, optimistic & naive young sailor Beggar Woman/Lucy Barker (Soprano 40's-50's) Barker's wife, who he believes to be dead.
Schizophrenic personality ranging from pathetic to crudely suggestive.
Judge Turpin (Bass/Baritone 40's-50-s) A lustful, immoral, power hungry man.
Twists the law to suit him.
Beadle Bamford (Tenor-30's) Judge Turpin's partner in crime.
A bully with a thin veneer of gentility.
Adolfo Pirelli (Tenor-30's) a phony mountebank who claims to be the king of the barbers, the barber of kings.
Tobias (Tenor, late teens-20's) Pirelli's young, simple, but kind-hearted drum-beating assistant.
